The “Chinese Language” series was commissioned by the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and written by Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College for overseas Chinese youth studying Chinese. It is intended for use by students from first to sixth grade in full-time Chinese schools abroad. The first edition was published in October 1998. To further improve the textbook’s completeness and better meet the needs of Chinese language education overseas, the Beijing Chinese Language and Culture College undertook a comprehensive revision of the first edition over two years.

The revised version of “Hanyu Chinese Language” includes three series: the textbook, the Chinese Language Workbook, which is supplementary practice material, and the Teacher’s Manual, which serves as a teaching reference. Each of the three series includes 12 volumes, with 15 lessons per volume. Every 5 lessons make up one teaching unit.

The revised version maintains the original principles of spiral progression, close connection to life, content coherence, and independent use. The selection and adaptation of vocabulary and text reflect the realities of students’ lives and modern culture. The grammar and usage points have been streamlined and clarified for easier instruction and understanding, while preserving the systematic features of the original series. The structure of each volume and each unit has been carefully planned to suit elementary school students and emphasize stage-based, progressive learning.

Additionally, the series aligns with the standards of the Chinese Proficiency Test for Young Learners, connecting with the broader curriculum of Chinese language education (elementary, middle school) and the Language Textbook series used in full-time schools in China.
